Summary: This week we continued trying to find what was causing the fish to die in the Gray Area. We looked at two different files, the acid rain and sediment files, to see if they contributed to the death of the fish. We ran some tests to determine the acid level in each body of water in the Gray Area. Before the experiment, we needed to know some background information on acid rain. I learned the smaller the number the concentrated the acid is. I also learned that there are two main types of acid rain, nitric acid rain and sulfuric acid rain. The main cause of nitric acid rain is cars and trucks, while the main cause of sulfuric acid rain is electric utilities. The tests showed that the acid was mostly in the Rafta River Area Soil Run-Off. This made me think why is it more acidic in some places rather than others, but as I continued to read the files I understood more. The files stated that surrounding the Rafta River is granite cannot neutralize acid which is why that area has a high pH number. As for what caused the acid rain, there are many possibilities, but the Toy Factory could be causing the acid rain. The files said that during the day they release white gasses so people think it is steam, but at night they release dark colored pollutants, so people cannot see. The acid rain is bad because it harms or disturbs much of the waterlife. In some areas, acid rain could make a whole food chain collapse. After that, we did some testing on how sediment could be involved in the fish death. The only body of water that had too much sediment was the Missterssippi River. Since cutting down trees can effect erosion we thought it could be the Clear Cut Forest, but the forest is no where near the Missterssippi River. When I looked at the files it said that the farm, located right next to the Missterssippi, allowed sheep to start overgrazing because there was a high demand for wool in Synchony City. The overgrazing damaged many plants which held the soil in one place. Since the farm is right next to the Missterssippi River it has something to do with the erosion. The sediment and dirt would cover the water and absorb sunlight making the water warmer than normal and fish need the right temperature to survive. The file stated that warmer water contains less oxygen which is something the fish need. The fish are unable to see in murky water which means they cannot find food. Both acid rain and sediment could be causing the death of fish in the Gray Area.
S&EP-Analyzing Data: This week we conducted two experiments, one on acid rain and one on sediment. The goal of these experiments was to see if the different bodies of water from the Gray Area are to acidic or contained to much sediment. After conducting the experiment for acid rain we recorded the pH number of each body of water so we could better compare the levels of acidity. The only area with such a concentrated level on acidity (pH #-2) was the Rafta River Area Soil Run-Off. After analyzing this data we started to put information and evidence together. The area around the Rafta River contained granite which does not neutralize acid. Since it doesn't neutralize acid it explains why the level of acid is very high in the area. The second experiment we did was to see what rivers had too much sediment because sediment could greatly effect the fish. The test showed that the Missterssipppi River had too much sediment. Looking at he data sheet, as well as the map of the Gray Area, it was hard to tell where the sediment came from since the Clear Cut Forest was so far away. When we read the files we noticed that that sheep were allowed to overgraze since their wool was in high demand. Many shrubs and most of the grass was ruined because the sheep were overgrazing. The plants held the soil in place, but since they got damaged the soil was prone to erosion. I feel like having all my data on on sheet, but neatly organized, helped me better analyze the data because I could compare the sediment and acid rain results at the same time.
XCC-Patterns: One main pattern throughout the Gray Area project is how all the suspects "play dirty". For instance, Ken Unballe, the owner of the water slide, bribed one of his employees to put extra water fleas where they dump out the chlorine. He had his employee do this because water fleas are sensitive to chlorine and since they dump the chlorine in that general area he thought this would help prove him innocent. Ken decided to add water fleas because if Juan Tuno discovered that there are less water fleas in the area where the chlorine is dumped out his company would get in trouble because the chlorine is effecting the environment and possibly the fish. Another example of wrong doing points towards the Toy Factory. The toy Factory releases white smoke during the day which people mistake for steam and they release dark toxic gasses at night so it blends in and is not visible to others. I believe everyone plays dirty to cover up how they might be contributing to the fish loss. The information on how all these suspects playing dirty makes me think that each company thinks they are the cause of the fish loss. All the suspects want to keep their businesses up and running, so they try to work their way around being called out for killing the fish.
Multiplier: This week in science class I was a mutant and to be more specific a wanderer because I tried to find as much evidence as possible to backup what my group thought about the dead fish.
