WAC Argumentative Essay - Gray Bay
Dear Editors of the Gray Times,
As you know, fish have been drastically dying off over the last five years in the Gray Area at a rate of one thousand per year. Many have been blamed, but we have all put off naming the real culprit. I would like to inform you that I have caught the person responsible for the fish kill. The culprit who has caused the fish to die is Avery Wun. The oil and carbon dioxide from Avery Wun's cars are killing the fish. In the Emergency Meeting of the Gray Area Board of Supervisors, Mandy Lyfbotes stated that cars drip oil. As well as that, some people change their own car oil and dump it into the gutters. Both the dripping and the dumped oil end up in the Gray Bay. Acid rain is a big problem caused by Avery Wun. Her car releases carbon dioxide which assists the creation of acid rain. Acid rain effects the fish in a negative way. Avery Wun has been causing the fish to die just by driving around Synchrony City.
The oil from Avery Wun's car starts on the streets and gutters but ends up in the Gray Bay killing the fish. During the Emergency Meeting of the Gray Area Board of Supervisors Avery Wun supported how oil can make food chains collapse. To quote what Avery Wun said, "I've read that oil can coat water animals and kill them. It's also poisonous if eaten. Some oil sinks to the bottom and harms the creatures that live there. It also affects the food chain. If one animal population dies from the oil, other animals that eat them will have less food to eat." Even though at that moment Avery Wun didn't realize it, she helped prove herself guilty. Not only that, the autopsy results showed that oil was a major factor in killing the fish. Fourteen out of fifty fish for sure died from oil because it was found in their intestines. Oil itself might not be killing all the fish, but it sure is playing a big part in that.
Another way the oil from Avery Wun's car is effecting the fish is oxygen deprivation. At the Emergency Meeting of the Gray Area Board of Supervisors, Ken Unballe explained how oil can lead oxygen loss in the water. As Ken Unballe said, "Yeah, oil floats on water and covers the surface. Then there is less oxygen in the water. Oil can be harmful to living things." Defending himself, Ken Unballe implied that Avery Wun's car oil is assisting in the oxygen deprivation. The oil causes oxygen deprivation because it floats along the water absorbing the sunlight and making the water warm. In the sediment files, the article Fish Could Be In Hot Water shares a scientists point of view on what warm water does to the fish. The scientist clearly stated that warm water contains less oxygen the cold water. In addition, the autopsy results supported that oxygen loss was a main contributor to the fish kill. Twenty-one out of fifty of the fish tested had clamped fins which is a sign they died from oxygen deprivation. Oxygen loss caused by motor oil is a big part of the fish dying off.
Oil may not be the whole problem, acid rain is playing a part in killing the fish. Acid rain causes certain bodies of water to have high levels of acidity and it harms water life. The carbon dioxide produced by cars combines with evaporating water. When the evaporated water forms into clouds and rains down on the Gray Area, you have acid rain. The population in Synchrony City increased a considerable amount around seven years ago which explains why the acidity levels of some rivers increased over the last five years. In the acid rain files, it states that 88% of acid rain in the Gray Area is nitric acid rain. The files also shows pie charts explaining what polluters causes sulfuric and nitric acid rain. Cars and trucks were the cause of 42% of nitric acid rain while electric utilities produced 32% and others producing 26%. A concerned citizen wrote to the editor of the Synchrony City Chronicles, asking why is it that only the Rafta River has a high level of acidity while the Missterssippi and Fo River don't. The answer to that is quite simple. The soil surrounding the Rafta River contains granite which does not neutralize acid while the soil around the Missterssippi and Fo River contain limestone and clay which balances the acidity level. As well as that, the autopsy results say that seven out of fifty of the fish deaths are unknown. I believe that these fish deaths were caused by acid rain because it can be very harmful to water life. Acid rain caused by cars is one main contributor to the fish kill.
Even though Avery Wun is the wrongdoer, others have been blamed throughout this. For example, Don Juan Tuno was accused of killing the fish after Ken Unballe. Many people involved in this mystery thought that Don Juan Tuno was the culprit because he owns three different businesses that could majorly affect water life. Luckily for him, his businesses do not affect the fish according to test results. To find out what type of oil was in the Gray Bay, an experiment was conducted and it proves the oil was not from Don Juan Tuno's oil refinery, but it was from Avery Wun's car. A test on the acid rain was conducted, as well because some people thought smoke from the refinery was to blame. As I said earlier, the acid rain files said cars and trucks were the cause of 42% of nitric acid rain, however electric utilities produced 32% and others producing 26%.This shows that the acid rain is caused by Avery Wun's car. Other tests have been ran pointing to a few other suspects, but the autopsies and files have proved that Avery Wun is guilty. Avery Wun has kept a low profile during this investigation and many have not blamed her, but Avery Wun is the person responsible for the fish kill.
With all this information it is clear to see that Avery Wun and her car has a big impact on the fish. Aver Wun's car oil ends up causing oxygen deprivation or eaten by water life, both leading to the death of fish. Not only that, the carbon dioxide from Aver Wun's car is causing acid rain which is playing a big role in killing the fish. The main problem is Avery Wun's car's oil and carbon dioxide, so one main way to reduce it is by encouraging the city to buy electric cars. Since some people don't have the money to buy electric cars, another way to solve this issue would be to enforce public transport. Lastly, carpooling would leave less carbon dioxide in the air. Encouraging people to stop this problem by using electric cars, public transport, and carpooling we can stop the fish kill caused by Avery Wun.
