Green Sea Turtle Project Blog 3/12/17

Summary:
The main reason of endangerment to green turtles are humans. People in West Africa use it for medicine. Others harm it for its meat and eggs. In addition, they are harmed from boat propellers, and fishnets. Although accidents, the turtles get injured when people go fishing due to the hooks. As people trash beaches the population of green sea turtles decreases. This is due to the fact that they need to nest on the beach. The food source for the green sea turtle, seagrass, is a victim of coastal development. This means there is more pollution and sediment in the water and they have to compete for food. In 2004, green sea turtles were put on the iucn red list. Even though the iucn only recognized them then, the concern of their endangerment dates back to 1940. Not only are green sea turtles used for medicine and meat, they consume seagrass and keep it healthy. By keeping the seagrass healthy other animals like fish can consume it, as well. There are approximately 85,000 to 90,000 nesting females, as of now. The number of immature females and just males are unknown. Green sea turtles are protected by a few state and national laws due to their listing on the endangered species list. Conservationists are trying to turn away from making money off of killing the turtles and try to increase the popularity of turtle tourism.

Backward-Looking: How much did you know about the subject before we started?
I never knew anything specific about the green sea turtles I did know some things about endangered animals. An endangered species is any animal that is in danger of going extinct. As for the information about the sea turtle, I had to gather all while working on the project. I now know that the green sea turtle can live in almost any ocean environment. The green sea turtle can survive in both cold and warm water oceans. They can be found around the world. As long as they have food, like sea grass, they can live in any ocean. The scientific of the green sea turtle is the Chelonia mydas. They can live up to 70-80 years. The green sea turtle has been around since the time of the dinosaurs. It is quite obvious they are green, but they weigh around 700 pounds. I knew some information on what an endangered species was, but now I know a lot more about the green sea turtle.

Inward-Looking: How do you feel about this piece of work? What parts of it do you particularly like? Dislike? Why? What did/do you enjoy about this piece or work?
I feel quite proud about my work for this project, especially since we did not have as much time as I would have hoped for. I really like the info graphic my team and I made. It was pretty and informative. The only problem was we left out our citations and didn't include extra informations. (I fixed both of those.) The only thing I disliked was how our presentation went. We did try and practice during lunch and break, but it wasn't enough because we left out some key information in the presentation. Despite the rushed feeling I did enjoy and like this project because I got to learn more about something I didn't know that much about.

Outward-Looking: What the one thing you particularly want people to notice when they look at your work?

The one thing I would like for people to notice if they were looking at our info graphic was our deep understanding of why the green sea turtles are endangered. We figured out that humans were the main cause of the sea turtle's endangerment and could be considered an invasive species. If the read what we've written about why they are endangered they can see what they need to do to fix it. I am also very proud of the deep understanding we got of the topic in the short amount time we had. Without our understanding of endangerment we couldn't have made such a great info graphic or even presented the topic knowing what to say.I think the way we comprehended the green sea turtle's endangerment was the base of the whole project and without a solid foundation you cannot build upward.

Forward-Looking: What would you change if you had a chance to do this piece over again?
If I had the chance o redo this project, I would. I would definitely include an extra fun fact, more about our government plan, and citations because that is the reason I have to regrade it. This would make it easier on my group and the teacher. I would have divided up the work so that we finished sooner. This would have given us the time to focus on the presentation, and had it completely memorized. We could have been more convincing and give the class a  better understanding of our topic. If it wasn't mandatory I guess I wouldn't have made an info graphic. I would have made either a short video or brochure because you have more space to express your ideas. Lastly, I would have chosen a different website to make our info graphic because they only give you limited space which is why we couldn't include the stuff we got docked for. (I rearranged things so it could fit now.) I am happy wiht the way things turned out, but I would change somethings.
