Atoms, Matter and More 3/19/17

Our energy

Summary:
Matter is something that has mass and takes up space. This can be a solid, liquid or gas. Matter is indivisible and indestructible. All the matter in the world is only made up of about 100 different elements in various combinations. The human body is only made up of about six elements. Density is the amount of matter in a given space. Atoms are the basic build blocks of matter. Elements are pure substances, made of one atom, and are on the periodic table. Compounds are a combination of two different types of elements. A molecule is two or more of the same type of atom. A molecule can be an element or not. Atoms are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons have a positive charge, while electrons have a negative charge, and neutrons have a neutral charge.

S&EP-Using Math:
As we were learning about density, we had a mystery to solve. King Arthur lost his gold crown. The knights have found five, but cannot determine which one is made of solid gold. Our job was to find the density of each crown and see which one matched up with the density of gold. To find the crown that matched the density of gold I had to divide mass by volume. The mass is the amount of stuff and volume is the given space which makes sense because density is how much stuff is in a given space. In this case the mass of the crown discovered by Gawain was 3474 grams and the volume was 180 cm cubed. If you divide 3474 by 180 you will get 19.3 g/cm cubed, the density of gold. Following the formula above I found the density of each crown.  Crown one ended up with a density of 10.5 g/cm cubed which is matching to silver, not pure gold. The second crown has a density of 2.7 g/cm cubed which means that the crown in made out of aluminum. As for crown 3, had a density of 7.8 g/cm cubed which is the density of steel. Lastly, crown five had a density of 13.5 g/cm cubed matching to lead.

XCC-Scale Proportion and Quantity:
What is an ion? An ion is an atom that has gained or lost electrons. Losing or gaining electrons determines the charge of the atoms. For example, a cation is an atom that has lost electrons. This means its charge is positive because there are more protons than neutrons. As for anions, they are atoms that have gained electrons. This means that they have lost electrons because there are more electrons than protons. Since the protons define the atom, it is the electrons that are lost because if the atom loses a proton it is an entirely different atom. For a atom that has not gained or lost an electron there is an equal amount of protons and electrons. This keeps it balanced and since opposites attract the filled space is filled with electricity not magnetism. All in all, losing or gaining an electron in the atom leads to an ion.

Multiplier:
This week I was a mutant, to be more specific a learner because we started a new unit and I wanted to learn more about it.
