Timeless: The newest superhero 12/4/16

Summary
Immortality. Something most people want, but only one creature can biologically live forever. The immortal jellyfish or turritopsis dohrnii is the only living creature known to man that can hit the back button and change its age. The jellyfish starts off as any other, as a polyp or baby. It slowly grows and matures until it is a jelly fish that is swimming free. When needed the immortal jellyfish uses its "superpower" to defy the laws of time. It can shrink back to being a baby polyp. It does this through transdifferentiation in which its cells can be many different types of cells. For instance, a skin cell can become a blood cell. Even though this animal is immortal it can die from predators and diseases. Sharks and a few types of fish can cause the death of the immortal jellyfish through consumption. These jellyfish are typically found in warmer ocean waters; they can be found from the Caribbean Sea and the Mediterranean. These jellyfish have wonderful powers that can hopefully unlock the secret to being immortal.
SP2: Developing and Using Models
Using the idea of the immortal jellyfish, I had developed the idea of the superhero and created a model or drawing. While drawing my superhero Timeless, I had to be very careful because this was the main character of my comic book and there was no going back. In addition to that, I had to convey the message that she shared the powers of a jellyfish without going over the top. When drawing I had to go back and change bits and pieces several times because I was trying to fit a backstory to it. Creating the drawing helped me visualize and completely work out all the kinks for my superhero. The model of my superhero was helpful now and I'm sure it will be as we dive deeper into the project.

This week I was a mutant, to be more specific a learner, due to the fact that I tried to gather as much information as possible on the immortal jellyfish.

XCC: Structure and Function
After endangerment the immortal jellyfish turns back to a physical state of immaturity. Their size decreases as they start the life cycle at one of the early stages. They continue to do this many times. The only way for the immortal jellyfish to die is if it gets eaten or is infected with a disease. The immortal jellyfish does this because its cells are able to morph into a new cell. Such as a nerve cell transfiguring into a skin cell. The jellyfishes cells can transform any time from being a polyp (baby) till it is fully grown. Hydrozoans are small vertebrates that change or look different based on where you are in the life cycle. When an experiment was conducted an observation was that its small vertebrates move back to the way it was when it was a polyp, or baby. The immortal jellyfish can do this amazing thing because its hydrozoans can change size along with its cells changing from one cell to another.
