Cell Wars: Who Will Be The New President Of Cell Land? 9/18/16

Summary:

Our main goal of this project was to learn about the structure and function of our assigned organelle. I believe my group and I accomplished this goal. The lysosome can very in size, but tends to be large. That helps it collect all the waste in the cell so its digestive enzymes can decompose it. Lysosomes are quite flexible allowing it to move through the cell. Most think that lysosomes just break down waste, but it is more than that. They break food and nutrients, as well as waste. The attack viruses that try to enter the cell. The lysosome performs these functions in areas of the cell with lower oxygen levels. The lysosome is membrane bound. The membrane holds the enzymes inside or they would eat the cell. I have decided to vote for the peroxisome because it is very similar to the lysosome. Throughout running we acted as brothers because they break down waste, but in higher oxygen levels. Peroxisomes have the thickest membrane. They have many functions like consuming alcohol, getting rid of h202, consuming waste, breaking down fatty acids which are then shipped to the mitochondria. Since there are so many functions the structure accommodates to the function. I am proud of what I learned and who I am voting for.

Backward-Looking: How much did you know about the subject before we started?

When the project was introduced I realized I had some basic knowledge on the cell and organelles. I looked back to my notes and work that I had done in fifth grade and realized it was somewhat similar to what we were doing. The project we did in the fifth grade was the organelle trail. You were assigned an organelle and had to describe where it is located, what other organelles it works with, what it does, and your citations. We did something like this except in more depth. For this project I had to focus and learn about the lysosome which before this project I didn't know was an organelle. Something I really comprehended this year was that if one organelle was missing or malfunctioning the whole cell would be affected greatly. For instance, if the lysosome weren't there the cell would have waste and nutrients that are not broken down. Some say that the peroxisome could do the lysosomes job and vise versa, but the peroxisome functions in areas with high levels of oxygen. The lysosomes have a higher level of acidity. Peroxisomes consume alcohol and break down h202. The lysosomes digest viruses that try to enter the cell. This goes for any other organelle, another can't just fill in for it.

Inward-Looking: What grade would you give it? Why?

If I were grading my Organelle Wars project I would give it an A. I would do this for many reasons. One main thing is that our group checked each component of our project against the rubric more than once. We discussed what our video, smears, and posters needed to include to recieve full credit. As well as that, we asked the group next to us to give us a total grade and they told us we would get an A. Looking at my tackk you can see the effort we put through each stage of the project. From beginning to end my group and I did our best to get the best information, make creative posters, and smear others with accurate information. The posters are easy to read and visually appealing to others. Our campaign video is easy to hear and gives a wonderful idea of our candidate. Lastly, our smears were not attacking the same organelle over and over. We tried to mix it up and smear as many other organelles as possible. Finally, I feel like my group split up the work evenly. If someone couldn't contribute in one way they would do more work in another area of the project. I am very pleased with the result of our project and I believe it deserves and A.

Outward-Looking: Did you do your work the way other people did theirs? In what ways did you do it differently? In what ways was your work or process similar?

Even though each group had a different organelle you can definitely see some differences and similarities in their end result. For the video some groups decided to make animations, but my group did not. Most groups made newscasts which was our original idea, but we made a video set up in a court. I know that we divided the work like some other groups. Especially when it came to research we did our best to make sure everyone was contributing because it always makes a project better. No group had similar posters because they were each dedicated to your organelle. If we had a different organelle the poster would be different from the writing to the color of the poster board. Like most other groups, all our smears and replies were supported with evidence from credible sources. This was an important piece of the project and this was something we did similar to others. There were many instances in which we did our project like other, but there were some where we stood out.

Forward-Looking: What would you change if you had a chance to do this piece over again?

I really enjoyed this project, but if I had the chance I would do this project over again. I would mainly change the format of making the video. I would prefer to make an animated video because it captures the audiences attention better. We ended up not doing that because no one in my group has made an animated video before. Another thing I would change is what was said in the video. It would have been nice for our video to have a gimmick like the ribosome video. I would also smear more than one organelle in our video. Our campaign video was targeted towards the vacuole, but it would have been more beneficial to attack ore than one (peroxisome video). As well as that, I would start making posters earlier, so we can make more. This would have helped us advertise the lysosome as the best candidate and organelle. Lastly, I would make a more specific timeline. Time wasn't a major issue, but if we had planned it out better we could have included everything that I mentioned in this paragraph. There are somethings I would change, but I am very happy with the result of our project.
