Cell Wars (Lysosome): 9/4/16

Summary: Inside the cell there are various organelles that allow the cell to function in the way it does. One of these organelles is the lysosome which was discovered in 1955. Some say that the lysosome acts as the stomach of the cell, breaking down macromolecules, but it really has a few other functions. The digestive enzymes that are inside lysosomes not only digest macromolecules, they "attack" uninvited bacteria. As well as that, the lysosome repairs cell membranes that have been damaged. There is a membrane surrounding the lysosome keeping the enzymes from digesting the cell. The lysosome is found in a wide variety of animal cells. If no food is available and the body needs energy a signal is sent. The lysosome then digests organelles to feed the body. You really don't want to get on the lysosomes bad side. Many confuse peroxisome for the lysosome and they do similar functions, but the lysosome has a lower pH and does its job in lower oxygen areas. The lysosome plays a larger role in the cell than most people think.
S&EP-Arguing From Evidence: While running the campaign for president of cell land, my group and I smeared other candidates. It wasn't enough just to smear them, we had to provide solid evidence as to why our smear was accurate. Our first smear targeted the mitochondria. Even though it wasn't a disease smear we still had to support it with evidence. Our smear for the cell membrane is about a disease that occurs if it fails or is weakened, cholera. The last smear we posted targeted the vacuole and its function, storing proteins. In all smears, I worked with my group to make a good smear, find a credible source, and develop a brief description on why our smear makes sense. Overall I believe our smears turned out good and was used for their intentional purpose, make others see our organelle as the best candidate.

Vote 4 Lysosome!!! We're taking in the bad and giving you the good. How? We have lots of enzymes that can get rid of all the bacteria and also give the cell protein. On the other side, the vacuole just stores all the waste while the Lysosome breaks it down.

XCC-Structure And Function: You can't support an organelle as president without knowing its structure and function. The lysosome is a spherical shape that can change in size depending on the job needing to be done. They float around carrying their digestive enzymes. The lysosome is surrounded by a membrane like the entire cell it self. This shape helps it carry out its function. The lysosome has many functions it carries out. One function is autophagy, which means self eating. Autophagy is when lysosomes break down molecules that are part of the cell or others. If an organelle no longer functions it is broken down by the lysosome. Macrophages (part of the immune system) swallow bacteria and viruses the to be broken down lysosome, as well. Another function of the lysosome is crinophagy. Lysosomes digest extra secretory products. If a cell were to make a hormone to be discharged and the make extra the lysosomes will break them down. After breaking down the molecules the lysosome will release into the cytoplasm. Lysosome breaks the molecules into their most basic forms and they will be reused. If the lysosome digested some extra hormones made up of proteins they will break down the proteins into individual amino acids. It will then be released into the cytoplasm to be reused. They take care of cellular homeostasis, plasma membrane repair, cell signaling, and energy metabolism. The lysosome fights diseases in the cell. The lysosome is more than just a circle that eats food.
