Summary: Throughout this week, the main topic of discussion was food waste and food systems. To understand the food system and how it works, we went through the system of apples and how they can be wasted in each step. The apples are produced and they can be wasted when they are eaten by insects. Due to this, they can't sell, so the farmers throw the apples away. Next, the apples are harvested. If apples have fallen on the ground or are not up to standard the farmers throw them away, even though they are perfectly fine. After that, the apples are washed and waxed to look appealing to customers. During this step, apples are wasted if the they are ruined while waxing. Some apples are then processed into different food items, such as pie filling, apple sauce and more. If people mess up during this conversion, the apple product gets thrown away. Then, the apples are packaged. If packaged incorrectly, the apples get thrown away. After this step, the apples get transported to a store. While transported, the conditions of the truck may not be correct for the apples. If this occurs the apples are discarded because they think something may have gone wrong. The apples are then put up for sale and different stores. At the stores, they put many on the shelves to attract people to buy them. All the extras can't be reused, so the apples get thrown away. Once bought, the apples are stored at home. While stored man people forget about them and due to this they go bad. When the apples go bad they are thrown away. Next, the apples are prepared and consumed. Some apple products, like pie filling have to be prepared, while regular apples don't have to be prepared. Apples can be wasted while being prepared. If the batch turns out bad, people just throw it away. As for consuming, if people make too much or put too much on their plate and they don't want leftovers they discard the apples. The final step is disposing. So many parts of the apple are thrown away, not just the core. The core could be composted, the seeds could be panted, and the apple could feed animals. After going through the process an apple goes through we went through the steps of a food of our choice. My group and I chose strawberries which was very similar to apples. Going through the system of produce and how it is wasted helped me understand why so much food is wasted and gave me some ideas on how to prevent it.

S&EP - Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions: While going through the system that apples go through, as well as a food of our choice, we needed to explain how the food was being wasted and describe solutions to prevent the wastage. My group and I went through each step from production to disposal explaining how the apples and strawberries (the food of our choice) were getting wasted. If insects and other animals nibble on the strawberries, they are disposed. While harvesting, the strawberries may have fallen and are dirty, so they get thrown away. During inspection and cleaning, strawberries are discarded if not up to the high standards. If the strawberries are ruined while processing, the food item is thrown away. People don't want to waste money on new packaging, so if it is messed up the strawberries go straight to the trash. If the truck transporting the strawberries doesn't have the right conditions the strawberries go to landfills. At the store, to many are put on the shelves and cannot be reused. Eventually, the strawberries are thrown away. While stored at home people forget about them for a week or two. People throw it away because they think it is bad. People prepare to much food and put too much on their plates, so they throw a lot of it away. Instead of finding ways to reuse the leftovers and scraps, it goes into the trash which leads to landfills. After explaining ways strawberries are wasted we came up with solutions. You can use leftover strawberries in jams, cakes, smoothies and other recipes. People can cut the leaf off more accurately, so they don't waste as much of the strawberry. As well as that, people should only buy and prepare the amount of strawberries they are going to eat. Even though it doesn't seem too important, you can compost you strawberry scraps. Throughout explaining and finding solutions I learned a lot about how food is wasted and ideas on how to stop that.

XCC - Systems: This week in science we went over the food system in particular the system apples go through. After finishing the system of apples we got to do a food of our choice, and my group chose strawberries. This is the system the strawberries go through. First, the strawberries are planted and taken care of so they grow well. Then, the strawberries are picked off of bushes by farmers. After, the strawberries are washed and inspected. Some strawberries are then converted into certain food products such as strawberry jam, strawberry cake, and strawberry drinks, while some are left as they are. Next, the strawberries that are left the same are packaged in clear, plastic containers. Later, they are transported by truck or plane to a grocery store. Then, the strawberries are abundantly stacked on shelves and bought by consumers. After that, they are stored at home in a refrigerator. Later on, the strawberries are prepared and eaten by consumers. Finally, the strawberries or leaf of the berry is thrown into the trash when it could be repurposed. The system the apples wet through was quite similar accept the apples are packaged differently. Inn addition, the apples are waxed to look shiny and more appealing to customers. Even though I knew the general food system, I learned a lot about the system fruits go through to get from the farms to the trash.

Multiplier: This week I was a mutant, to be more specific a creator. I was a creator because I volunteered to find information my group and I needed. I tried to assist my group and find useful information that would help us move forward.
