WAC-Three Gorges Dam
China should not build any more hydroelectric dams along the Jinsa or Yangtze River. Building the Three Gorges Dam disrupted the ecosystem and caused many environmental problems. It caused damage to the wildlife, surrounding people, and somewhat the river. Due to the dam, millions had to leave their homes and families with very little or no financial help. Mostly farmers were forced to leave the comfortable homes and farm where the land was not as good. Many historical treasures and archeological digging sites were ruined because of the dam. Treasures from original Chinese cultures can now never be found. The Three Gorges Dam disrupted the environment and people.
The wildlife in the Yangtze River and the surrounding people were greatly affected by the Three Gorges Dam, but not in a good way. Dangerous erosion was caused due to construction on the reservoir banks. After the reservoir was built risks of landslides increased around seventy percent putting those near the river in danger. As well as that, gigantic waves and floods can occur as a result of debris flowing into the reservoir. If China built more dams it would effect many ecosystems causing them to collapse and it would put many people who live the dams in danger. The Three Gorges dam risked the harm of animals in the river as well as people living nearby.
1.4 million people were kicked out of their own homes because of the Three Gorges Dam. For most people it was a very difficult move with very little or no money to support themselves. One-third of the relocated group were peasant farmers whose family had probably owned the land for generations. For farmers who were given new land, the land was rocky, not as fertile and the land was prone to mudslides. People who had to move had to find new homes and learn new skills to make enough money. The building of approximately four more dams would cause about 5.6 million people to relocate and most leaving their families behind. The dam put many people through pain and it was a hard transition.
Archeological sites and many artifacts from Ancient Chinese cultures were lost when the Three Gorges Dam was built. The dam blocked access to Dragon Bone Cave, where many fossils were previously found. Along the Yangtze River many artifacts were found, such as daggers, masks and animal statues.Artifacts from the Ba Civilization were discovered, but now they are lost along with pieces of the culture we could've known about. Items dated back as far as 316 B.C. are now lost. Creating more hydro electric dams would mean that China would lose many more precious artifacts that were important to their culture. The Three Gorges Dam took away many important artifacts that would have helped us learn about one of the earliest Chinese cultures, the Ba Civilization.
China should not build any more hydro electric dams. Hydro electric dams put the river wildlife, as well as people living near the river in quite an amount of danger. Many artifacts that historians would have benefited from were taken away by the building of the dam. Many relocations have been made to accommodate to the dam which left people in worry of money. Right now the Three Gorges Dam generates nine percent of China's electricity. China would have to build ten more hydroelectric dams the size of the Three Gorges dam for dams to produce one hundred percent of China's electricity which is not worth it. Overall the negative effects of building the Three Gorges Dam outweighed the positive effects which is why China should not build any more hydro electric dams.
