Summary: My group and I continued to work on our soil research and completed the document. From this I learned a few key things to remember:

  1. Soil is composed of organic matter, pieces of broken rock, and minerals
  2. It is very difficult to identify different types of soil since the mix with other soils and move.
  3. Soil is very valuable even though we don't acknowledge it. We depend on soil for food, clothing, to hold buildings steady, and much more.
  4. Soil is eroded by water most of the time.
  5. Soil loss can be prevented by planting trees and other plants because the roots help to hold the soil in one place.
With the substitute we worked on differentiating examples weathering, erosion, and deposition. Deposition is when soil and pieces of rock are added to a land form or landmass. After that, we were introduced to what are carbon footprint is and how it will be a part of our charity fair projects. First we had to determine where our materials came from. Then, we had to find the distance in kilometers from where the material came from to San Jose. After that, we had to find how are product would probably be transported. Next, we had to determine the kilograms for that material to make 1000 of our product. Then, we had to find the grams of carbon probably generated from shipping your product. Finally, we multiplied kilometers to reach San Jose by kilograms to make 1000 by grams of carbon generated to get our final answer. Since all our products would probably reach here by train and train takes up the least amount of carbon we wrote a paragraph on how delivering our materials by train is better than truck.

SP5: Using mathematics and computational thinking: I used mathematics and statistics to analyze data when I calculated my carbon footprint. We were calculating and analyzing our carbon footprint of getting our materials for our product delivered. My partner and I used math by multiplying the distance from where our product is from to San Jose in km, how many kg of the material used to make 1000 of our product, and how many g of carbon was generated by delivering our product.Using math helped us determine our carbon footprint and helped me understand how math is involved in science.
