Redesign the Respiratory System: 11/20/16

Summary:
The goal of this project was to gather information on issues with the body system you chose, use that information to develop a plan to fix it, and have a presentation of some sort to share all the information and planning you've done with the class. Throughout this project I have gained so much knowledge on the issues with the way the respiratory system is designed. For instance, you can inhale anything, this includes smoke and other chemical that can harm you body. When inhaled the chemicals and toxins travel with the oxygen and are not separated from each other. All gases end up in the lungs, and most can lead to serious damage to your respiratory system. After gathering this information we knew that with this opportunity to redesign the respiratory system we could prevent lung cancer, which most often leads to death.
Backward Looking:How much did you know about the subject before we started?
I definitely did have some solid background knowledge on the respiratory system both from the logs we did this year and all the work we completed in fifth grade. By background knowledge I mean the basics of this system such as the function, the organs, the functions of each organ, if and how it works with other body systems, and an analogy to explain this system. Here is the link to my blog that included that information: http://sp2026.blogspot.com/2014/10/respiratory-system.html Even though I had this information to go off of when starting this project I still had to do quite a lot of research with my group on diseases and issues with the respiratory system, different "materials" in the body, and the structure and function of the trachea. Some issues include asthma, tuberculosis, and bronchitis, but we decided to focus on fixing a very big problem; lung cancer. Some different materials we decided to use were smooth muscle and tissue which are common throughout the body. We figured out the structure and function of the trachea is extremely similar to the esophagus because both transport different things and are tube shaped. I did have some knowledge before starting the project that came in handy, but I learned a lot of useful information from the project, as well.
Inward Looking: How do you feel about this piece of work? What parts of it do you particularly like? Dislike? Why? What did/do you enjoy about this piece or work?
I am extremely happy with the work my group and I have done for this project and I am proud of the final result. I particularly like the way we decided to redesign the respiratory system because it was a bit bizarre, but it was effective. Also, I enjoyed that no one else had the respiratory system because it made our redesign stand out. I wish dislike how we had seven days to work on this project. If we had the full ten days our end result would have been much better. I enjoyed the simplicity of how much we had to complete, but how each step had to be well though out and detailed. This project was a very good experience of presenting good work when you do not have the ideal amount of time.
Outward Looking: Did you do your work the way other people did theirs? In what ways did you do it differently? In what ways was your work or process similar?
All groups had the same goal, to redesign the chosen body systems in the best way possible. Our group had a default difference since we decided to do the respiratory system and no one else did. In addition to that, all groups had the task of completing the design brief, written argument, and creating a way to present all this information. Our group didn't complete it in this order like other groups did. We worked on the brief together, then one of my teammates formulated it into and essay while my other partner and I worked on our animation. This was an efficient method to get the work done. We were similar to some groups in the way we presented our work. We used animaker, an animation website and so did other groups. There are clearly some ways in which we did the project similar and differently compared to other groups.
Forward Looking: What would you change if you had a chance to do this piece over again?
I am very proud of the work my group and I have completed for this project, but if I had the chance to do it over, I would. I would definitely work to complete the brief sooner. I would do this so that we would have more time to complete and improve upon our way of presenting. As well as that, I would not make an animation. I would want to make a small skit and a model like what the redesign the digestive system group did. I would do that because I really enjoyed watching it myself and you could tell the audience was engaged with the presentation. Either I would redesign the respiratory system differently or make the redesign more detailed. I would do this so that the audience has a better understanding of how and why we are redesigning the system in that particular way. Overall I had fun and am happy with my work that I have done on this project and I can't wait for the next project.
