Cellular Respiration VS. Photosynthesis 10/2/16

Summary:
Cellular respiration is when your body converts oxygen and glucose into energy. The oxygen humans and animals breathe breaks down, or makes glucose into tinier pieces, so the body can use it. Glucose, a sugar that your body needs to make energy, is a very important part of this cycle. The formula for this process is C6H12O6 + O2 -----> CO2 + H2O + Energy. Oxygen is in the mitochondrion and glucose is in the cytoplasm. The glucose molecule split into two pyruvic acids which produce a minimal amount of energy. When the pyruvic acids move into the mitochondrion huge amount energy is produced, along with carbon dioxide and water. As for photosynthesis, the formula is H20 + CO2 ---(light energy)--> O2+ C6H12O6. The carbon dioxide and water are in the chloroplast. Once you add the sunlight oxygen and glucose are produced.
S&EP- Using Mathematics:
As mentioned above, there are equations for both photosynthesis and cellular respiration. The equation for photosynthesis is H20 + CO2 ---(light energy)--> O2+ C6H12O6. The equation for cellular respiration is C6H12O6 + O2 -----> CO2 + H2O + Energy. These equations aren't balanced. That means that you start with more and end with less or the other way around. For photosynthesis you start with 2 hydrogen and end up with 12. You have 3 oxygen then end up with 8. As for the carbon, you start with 1 and end with 6. It is the opposite for cellular respiration. To balance these equations you need to make sure that the molecules add up to the same number on both sides. The balanced photosynthesis equation would be 6H2O + 6CO2 ---(light energy)--> 6O2 + C6H12O6. The balanced cellular respiration equation would be C6H12O6 + 6O2 -----> 6H2O + 6CO2 + Energy. There are the same type of molecules, but to balance it out you need to add more of the same type.
XCC-Cause and Effect:
In the picture at the very top of this post it shows that photosynthesis and cellular respiration form a full circle. One process causes the other to happen because the product of one are the reactants of the other. The end result of photosynthesis, O2 and C6H12O6, are what is needed for cellular respiration and vise versa. Without one the other couldn't continue and there would be no living things. As well as that, you can see another cause and effect relationship in both of the processes separately. For photosynthesis, if there was no light this process could not continue. In the gizmo, you could see that O2 and C6H12O6 were only produced after the sun shone on the plant. Also, in the cellular respiration cycle the Energy, CO2, and H2O would not be produced if the glucose didn't split into pyruvic acids. In the gizmo, you see that the glucose only moves into the organelle after it splits into two pyruvic acids. Without this the cycle would not work. There are many cause and effect relationships in photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
Multiplier:
I was a a mutant, to be more specific a wanderer. This is because when my teammate and I were working on the gizmo I shared whatever information I had with her and vise versa.
I got this off of the cell energy cycle gizmo. |
