2/27 Rocks and Minerals

Surprise: I was playing the mineral mines game when I found out conductivity is a way to test a mineral. I knew the measure of a minerals or any materials ability to transfer energy was a way to test a mineral, but I didn't know it was called conductivity. It was really surprising because I knew the definition just not what it is called. This teaches me how there may be more to what you already know, Example: You learn something in the third grade, 2 years later you find more to the information you learned 2 years ago (you learn).

Summary: This week we learned about rocks and minerals.  We learned about the three types of rocks, sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. An interesting fact is that igneous rocks cool above and underground. If the igneous rock cools underground it is shiny and crystal like, but if it cools above ground it it bubbly and has holes. We also learned about how to test minerals. You can use many different tests like, hardness, luster, streak, density, conductivity, structure and color. I learned a lot this week.

Backward-Looking: I studied rocks and minerals before we started.  In my old school that was a science unit last year. Last year I learned about the different kinds of rocks (sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous). As well as that, last year I learned four kinds of tests (hardness, luster, color, and streak). This year I learned that there is structure, density, and conductivity too. Conductivity is the measure of a minerals or any materials ability to transfer energy(usually electrical or thermal energy). Mineral structure is the geometric figure made by the way that the atoms or molecules are set up of the mineralDensity is a physical property of matter that is measured by the ratio of its mass to volume. I knew some things, but I am learning a lot.

Inward-Looking: Something that I found really frustrating this week is that the mineral mines game did not save. I wish you could make an account or it would automatically save. It was really annoying to start over once you have gotten pretty far. Even though it was frustrating, I enjoyed the game. It was fun how we got to go into different mines, find minerals, and test the minerals. There were some frustrating things, but some fun things.

Outward-Looking: I did some work like others because we were all doing the same game and worksheet. For notes, if someone didn't get much down someone at our table someone would help. Our table did help each other, especially towards the end of the game when we were running out of time. Some of the definitions I remembered so I helped people in my group. I feel like as I help I learn more. Overall this week I took help and gave help.

Forward-Looking: If I could redo the work this week I would, especially the mineral mines game. I want to redo the game so I can get through all the mines and find all the minerals. I didn't get all the mines done, but I did finish all the questions. I only got through 4 mines out of 7, but I still learned a lot. Even though there are is one thing I want to redo, I was happy with my work this week.
