Matter and Its Properties 1/30

Image
Surprise: I was surprised to find out that plasma is a state of matter. When I was reading about matter it really shocked me when it said that plasma is a state of matter. It was surprising because even though I knew there were more than three states of matter(solid, liquid, and gas),  it still shocked me because I have heard of plasma just not as a state of matter. I can learn that there might be more to what you already know. Summary: This week we learned more about matter. We learned about the states of matter (solid, liquid, gas, plasma, and Bose-Einstein). We also learned about atoms (what makes up matter). As well as that we learned slightly about compounds and mixtures. We learned a little about the periodic table too. Now I know so much more!!! Backward-Looking: I knew a little about this topic before we started. Now I know that there are 5 states of matter instead of 3. Now I know it's not only solid, liquid, and gas, but there is Bose-Einstein and plasma too. I al...

Matter and Its Properties 1/26

Surprise: I was at home and then I heard the doorbell ring. When I looked outside I was so shocked because it was a present for me. It was a beautiful doll. It was so surprising because I thought I already got all of my gifts. This applies to real life because you never know what's coming (good or bad). Summary: This week we started off with reviewing matter with a Bill Nye video. Then, the rest of the week we continued with all the experiments. Even though it wasn't an M&M, it was powders, it was still quite fun. I am really looking forward to finding out what the unknown powder is. Backward-Looking: I have really gotten better at experiments. I know how to prepare and conduct them. I knew how to I am just getting more and more accurate when I conduct my experiments. Not only that my group has gotten better at distributing the jobs of preparing and conducting an experiment. Now we each get to do something at least once maybe even more. In ward-Looking: This week I e...

Matter and its Properties 1/16

Surprise: This week I was surprised when I saw that "the line" wasn't a special property of M&Ms.  When we were conducting our experiment and then found our results I was shocked. I really thought "the line" was a special property of M&Ms because of my past experiences. It applies to real life, for example, when someone assumes that salmon will taste good because the last time they ate salmon it was good, but this time it turns out to be disgusting. Summary: This week we continued with doing experiments with M&Ms and it was really nice. At the end of the week we had a note taking day and learned more about matter. I learned the three states of matter solid, liquid, and gas. Then I learned about physical changes in matter tear, cut, fold, written, liquid, solid, gas, mixture, and solution. After that, I learned about chemical changes in matter burning, rusting, cooking, and color change. This week I learned a lot more about matter and its properties...

Matter and its Properties 1/09

Surprise: I thought the M&Ms' colors would mix, but instead the M&Ms' colors did not mix. Summary: This week we started the unit matter and its properties. We started doing many experiments like, what will happen to an M&M when we put it in water, will the color of M&M affect how fast the color dissolves, and will the colors of the M&Ms mix if we put more than one different color M&M. My hypothesis for the first M&M experiment was correct (color dissolved off the M&M).My hypothesis for the second experiment was incorrect(I thought brown would dissolve faster, but my result was red is the fastest). My hypothesis for the last M&M experiment was incorrect (the colors will blend, but they didn't they just came close to each other). Backward-Looking: I knew a little bit about matter and its properties before we started. I knew some of this unit because I briefly went through this unit last year. We went through it but no...

Severe Weather Project Reflection

Image
Summary: In this project I was partnered with Jessica and Sydney and we did a news broadcast. I enjoyed working in a group and pretending to be news broadcasters. My favorite part was filming the broadcast. News Broadcast Link- https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bw-L7c75wuHrdHNkUzdCb3ZoTmc/view?usp=sharing Backward-Looking: One problem that we kept having was scheduling a time to shoot the news broadcast. First we were going to do it last Wednesday then last Sunday then this Wednesday, but since the weather was nice on Monday we got to shoot the broadcast.  Another problem we encountered was actually shooting the broadcast. It took us many times until we could finally get the film right. Inward-Looking: Our goals did change as we worked. Jessica, Sydney, and I would try really hard to finish the goals we put on our goal setting sheet. If we didn't finish we would assign ourselves homework, but if there wasn't a lot left we would carry it on to the next day. If we finished...

12/12 Severe Weather Project

Image
Summary: This week we are doing a project and I am partnered with Sydney and Jessica. We are doing a news broadcast on floods and droughts. A flood results of many days of any form of water precipitating.  A drought is formed of less rainfall and dry weather for a long period of time. Backward-Looking : Three resources that were helpful were www.ready.gov/drought ,   www.ready.gov/floods  and www.weatherwizkids.com\weather-rain.htm . The website about droughts was extremely useful because many weather websites didn't talk about droughts.  I would use weather wiz kids again because it had many sub-topics on the one type of severe weather. The other website had fun facts about how to plan and prepare for the kind of severe weather which was a nice extra tip. Overall most of the resources I used this week I would like to use again. Inward-Looking : I really am happy that we get to do a news broadcast. I am happy I get to work in a group and build my colla...

Water Cycle 12/5

Image
Summary : I learned about the Water Cycle and how important it is to weather. The Water Cycle has an effect on weather because it creates snow, hail, and rain. When there is less pressure there are cloudy skies and when there is high pressure the skies are clear. The ingredients for clouds are humidity, condensation, and sudden change in air pressure(high to low)  Backward-Looking : Last year I learned about weather, but we concentrated on different types of weather and very little on the water cycle. We did not use any scientific terms while I studied this topic in the fourth grade. Now I know the main scientific terms of the Water Cycle and they are : accumulation- large bodies of water that is stored over time like oceans seas and lakes, condensation- a process where water vapor forms into clouds,  evaporation- when liquid water droplets form into water vapor,   precipitation- water falls from clouds in the form of rain snow or hail, surface runoff-any form of water ...
